Designing for the home audio experience

Bang & Olufsen

2019-2020

Project Overview

For every product released, a subsequent setup flow is released with it to ensure the intended experience of the product. After integrating tens of thousands of users from our former bluetooth app Beoplay, the app team looked into ways to revise the current setup flow in order to reduce the time spent before being able to play music. An updated setup flow is underway for both our wifi and bluetooth products to ensure the “fastest time to music,” whilst providing the functions needed to properly enjoy the product.

I had the responsibility of taking the current flow at the time, and finding ways to help the user feel like things were moving along as they set up their product. Consolidating multiple screens into one seamless transition was a big step in shortening time by a few seconds. Having the user’s wifi come up automatically as well as automating the software update, were places where changes felt small, but ultimately had big impact.

Fastest time to music

As part of the brief, we attempted to give the user the speediest flow through the setup and into their product, without neglecting proper onboarding. An example is the wifi screen. Its design has been streamlined to pick up the device’s wifi network and all that is required is the password. This is only necessary during a first time setup if the user chooses to save the password for future use.
